At P1FCU, serving our members goes beyond meeting their financial needs. As a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative, we’re committed to supporting the people, organizations, and communities we serve, work in, and live in.
We sat down with Renee Olsen, our Community Development Manager, to ask the following questions and discuss why community involvement matters and the difference that credit unions can make.
Credit unions are built around people, not profits. Because we’re member-owned, we’re able to reinvest in the communities we serve through sponsorships, volunteerism, financial education, scholarships, and partnerships with local organizations.
At P1FCU, community involvement isn’t something we do on the side; it’s part of who we are as an organization. When our communities thrive, our members thrive, and we’re proud to play a role in supporting local initiatives and organizations that make a positive impact.
What initiatives does P1FCU create for the community it serves?
Our community efforts focus on three areas: youth, those in need, and community support.
Financial literacy is a major part of what we do. From helping young people understand the basics of savings to providing guidance and resources for major life milestones, we’re committed to helping people build confidence and thrive financially throughout their lives.
We also provide scholarships, support local nonprofits, sponsor community events, and encourage employee volunteerism throughout the communities we serve.
One initiative we’re especially proud of is our Season of Giving campaign. Each December, our employees and branches come together to support local food banks, nonprofits, schools, and families in need. It’s a meaningful example of how we work together to make a positive impact throughout the communities we serve.
Giving back is ultimately about relationships.
We have the opportunity to work alongside incredible organizations and individuals who are making a difference every day. Supporting those efforts goes beyond financial contributions. It means volunteering at events, filling nonprofit needs lists, serving on boards and committees, and showing up when our communities need us.
When people come together around a common goal, the impact is incredible, and it’s rewarding to be a small part of that.
What is one thing the community has taught you?
One of the biggest lessons is that small acts of kindness and generosity can have a tremendous impact. Whether it’s a volunteer giving a few hours of their time, a business sponsoring a local event, or someone helping fulfill a nonprofit’s needs list, those efforts matter. On their own, it may seem small, but when people come together to support one another, the impact can be truly remarkable.
There are many ways that someone can make a difference in their community, including:
-
Volunteering for a cause you care about
-
Attending community events
-
Supporting local businesses
-
Donating to nonprofits
-
Helping your neighbor and those in need
Community development isn’t just about large donations or major projects. It’s about people showing up, getting involved, and supporting one another.
At P1FCU, we’re proud to support the communities and families we call home. Through financial education, volunteerism, partnerships, and community investment, we’re committed to helping create opportunities for individuals, families, and local organizations to succeed.
